Cleaning vs. Disinfecting: Getting Kitchens and Bathrooms Right

Spraying disinfectant on a dirty surface mostly wastes the disinfectant. The order of operations matters more than the product.

Cleaning and disinfecting are different jobs, and doing them in the wrong order is one of the most common mistakes in home cleaning. Cleaning removes soil, grease, and debris. Disinfecting kills microorganisms on an already-clean surface. Skip the first and the second barely works.

The reason is straightforward: disinfectants are neutralized by organic matter. Spray a sanitizer onto a counter with crumbs and a grease film and much of the active ingredient is consumed by that soil before it ever reaches a pathogen. The surface looks treated and largely is not. Clean first, then disinfect.

Dwell time is the second thing almost everyone gets wrong. Every disinfectant has a required contact time — the minutes it must stay visibly wet on the surface to work, typically somewhere between thirty seconds and ten minutes depending on the product. Spraying and immediately wiping dry means the product never had time to act. Read the label and let it sit.

In kitchens, focus disinfection where it changes outcomes: countertops used for food prep, sink basins and faucet handles, cutting board surfaces, refrigerator and cabinet handles, and the microwave keypad. Sponges are worth a mention of their own — they are the single most contaminated item in most kitchens, and they should be replaced regularly rather than optimistically sanitized.

In bathrooms, the priorities are toilet seats and the flush handle, faucet handles, light switches, door handles, and the shower controls. One habit worth adopting: close the toilet lid before flushing, which meaningfully limits how far aerosolized droplets travel onto nearby surfaces.

Finally, use separate cloths for kitchens and bathrooms and colour-code them if you can. Carrying one cloth between the two spaces moves contamination in exactly the direction you were trying to prevent — which is the point at which all the careful product selection stops mattering.
